As someone who is not a huge fan of electronic toys for kids, I was rather surprised when I picked this toy up at Target today and found that it did precisely what an electronic toy should... and not a bit more.
What does that mean, you might ask? Well, it's quite simple. Pressing a button gives an expected and logical reaction. Unlike the comparable counting-focused device we received from a relative for Christmas, the LeapFrog Chat and Count Phone, this one doesn't launch into a long bit of ADD-inducing song and dance and graphical madness when a button is pressed. In fact, if you press a letter, you get a simple corresponding pronunciation and large graphical display of the letter. And nothing more. How perfectly simple.
The other functions are pretty straightforward as well. Press the large green button on the upper left-hand side and it will play one of four variations of the ABC song, displaying each of the letters at the appropriate time in the back-lit window. Turn the dials on the side and the display will be illuminated in the corresponding color: red, blue, or orange. There is also a volume dial at the top and an on/off switch on the bottom, which is pretty unnecessary, as the device shuts off within seconds of not being used.
The best parts of all? This toy is not loud. At the maximum volume, it will not hurt your child's ears. At the lowest volume it is barely audible. Never obnoxious. And the very best part is that when your child is done playing with it, it will not reactivate itself in an effort to regain your child's attention, something we refer to in our house as the obnoxious 'call-back feature.' So your child must initiate play in order to receive a response from this toy. Which I think is ideal.
Is it educational? I would say yes, to the extent that any toy of this type can be. My two-year old daughter and I have been playing little games with it. I ask her to find a letter and she attempts to find it. The feedback comes from the device/toy - and from me as well. She seems to enjoy it, and loves playing the song and singing along with it when she is in her car seat. I do like that it's reinforcing a concept we are already learning through books and games.
If you're pondering an education electronic toy, something that will give appropriate feedback to a child learning his or her ABCs, I think this is pretty ideal. Skip the others. Most are too busy, too flashy, and give far too much irrelevant feedback.
