Fisher-Price T.M.X. Tickle Me Extreme Cookie Monster Review

Fisher-Price T.M.X. Tickle Me Extreme Cookie Monster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this toy for my son's birthday. I never saw the original Elmo from the Nineties. So, I can not make a comparison. I can tell you that this thing is a battery hog! If the batteries are not fully charged "Cookie" will not go through all his moves and has trouble getting up. On the other hand, when his batteries are fully charged, he almost seems to be too revved up. He sometimes falls back down after he gets up. But, he will stand up again if he falls. All in all, this toy does make my son happy. He laughs at it a lot. So do I, sometimes. Just be ready to change the batteries more often than you do with most toys. And that is six (yes six AA) batteries, not two or even four.

Tickle your funny bone with this hilarious Cookie Monster toy. Recommended for ages 18 months and older, he falls backwards, then rolls to the right and left while laughing hysterically. Meet T.M.X. Cookie Monster Part of the new Tickle Me Extreme friends, Tickle Me Cookie Monster is every bit as charming and fun as his popular friend, T.M.X. Elmo. When you touch his belly, this plush 11-inch doll falls backwards and giggles as he rocks back and forth. He even gets back up on his own! With googly eyes and soft blue fur, this Cookie Monster doll is cute, huggable, and a great toy for young children. He comes packaged in a cardboard carrying case with a handle at the top and a cutout to poke his ticklish tummy. Cookie Monster performs best on a hard, flat surface and requires six AA batteries (included) to bring him to life.Laughter Is Contagious Each T.M.X. friend has its own unique actions. The T.M.X. Cookie Monster features silly gyrations followed by humorous phrases. This motorized doll is so soft, kids can pick it up, snuggle with it, then put it down and watch it wiggle. It only takes two tickles to send Cookie Monster into hysterical laughter and kids soon find themselves giggling along. This doll has an incredible likeness to the actual Sesame Street character. Parents can add to the fun with T.M.X. Elmo or T.M.X. Ernie, sold separately.Tickle Test During the tickle test, it became easy to see why the T.M.X. friends are in such demand. When you tickle Cookie Monster's belly, he doubles over in hysterics. The second time he is tickled, he falls over backwards, rolls from left to right, then gets back up again, saying, "That was good." The doll moves best on a hard, flat surface and struggles a little when placed on carpet. But that was the only setback discovered during the hands-on testing process. A discreet on-off switch on his foot allows you to turn the doll off, if you're in need of some quiet time. Overall, T.M.X. Cookie Monster makes a great toy for its target age range. Even adults will crack a smile as this jolly character shakes and rolls with laughter. What's in the Box Plush Cookie Monster doll, 6 AA batteries

The Barbie Diaries Secret Message Charms & Purse Review

The Barbie Diaries Secret Message Charms and Purse
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My daughter got this for her 6th birthday. It was purchased in a store where the packaging allows people to try the toy's recording device before buying. Let's just say, that this toy must have been on the front of the shelf where EVERYONE was testing it out because the batteries on one of the recording devices was dead already. It requires 3 "button cell" watch batteries, which after trying 2 stores, we were able to replace for $3 a battery (yes, $9 total not including gas for the car) and that is just for the one device, the toy comes with 2 such devices!! That's a total of $18 just for batteries. My two girls do love this toy, however, and the recording devices are fun and seem to work well. The purse it comes with is made of very thin, cheap material. The item comes with a paper that says "We listen to you!" with a website for an online survey of this product. Guess what? The website does not work!! Again, it's a fun toy, but quite an investment!

MXL USB 009 24BIT/96KHZ USB Condenser Mic Review

MXL USB 009 24BIT/96KHZ USB Condenser Mic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For years I've been working with traditional XLR cardioid condenser mics (love my Neumann TLM) but I've had to travel a lot lately, and humping the XLR cables, pre-amp, and heavy mics through airports and hotels has gotten to be a real bother, so I started The Hunt for a Great USB Mic.
Now, there are good USB mics out there for under $100, and Blue's Snowball is adequate. At ~$70 you get what you pay for. It is ok for podcasting, if you aren't too picky about sound quality. I had one shipped to me, didn't like that background hum, sent it back thinking it was a problem with the mic, and got another one that sounded exactly the same. (And yes, I read all the instructions and advice and made all the adjustments. I even tried it on Mac, Laptop, and PC--so spare me the "oh did you try this, and you're an idiot because you didn't try that" Snowball fanboy snarkiness ;).
So, when I returned the Snowball, I considered getting Blue's Yeti, but it's sheer size disqualified it -- the mic is way too big and heavy to be considered remotely portable, and since I like to record standing-up instead of sitting down, I worried that it would be too heavy for my boom.
Having eliminated Blue's mics, I tried the Samson G Track at ~$120 and the AudioTechnica AT2020 at ~$110. I like that the Samson has the headphone output and the gain controls (which the AT does not) and better recording quality versus the AT2020 at 48kHz versus 44.1kHz. However, the Sampson weighs a half-pound more. For both mics the sound quality is great for podcasting, and while vastly superior to the Blue Snowball, and certainly adequate for most vocals that will be supported with background music, neither mic produces recordings clean enough and of high enough quality (limited to 16bit) for pure narration (IMHO).
So I upped my price-point again. And found THE perfect USB mic for voice-overs at ~$275. The MXL USB.009. It records at 24Bit/96kHz -- a huge improvement over the 16Bit/44.1kHz of all the other mics. It has the benefits of a mic jack and knobs for gain control like the Samson G Track, and is Plug and Play. I don't have to tweak anything on my Mac or my PC. It is lightweight, so I'm not worried about my boom tipping, and there is no background hum. I like the steel carrying case -- it weighs about 6 pounds with the mic and USB cable -- and makes it easy to carry through airport security.
Yes, the MXL USB.009 is 4x the cost of the Blue Snowball and 2.5x the cost of the Samson G Track and the AT2020, but for me, it is worth it. I not only do podcasting, but I do professional voice-over work, and I need something that will give me the convenience of direct USB recording with near-studio quality.

VTech Alphabet Apple Electronic Fundamentals of Reading Review

VTech Alphabet Apple Electronic Fundamentals of Reading
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are few electronic toys we like, but the Alphabet Apple is the cream of the crop in this genre of educational toys. The "Apple" is a very well designed toy.
Our daughter received it as a gift and my first concern was will it be another Sesame Street Talking Alphabet? Hard to understand, loud and annoying. The answer was a resounding, NO!
The voice is very clear, and deliberate--not shrill. Letters that might be confused due to similarity of sound (you know the ones you have to clarify on the telephone like "S as in Steven,") are for the most part easy to understand and differentiate. B, D, C, Z, M, N, F, and S are not easily confused. I will say that "F" is borderline but "S" will NOT be confused for "F".
The voice is pleasant and at a pretty decent volume level. Unfortunately there is no volume control on the Apple which could be a problem for children with hearing impairment and need a little more volume. It also would be nice when parents decide they need the volume (which really isn't annoying) to be taken down a notch.
The each button is clearly marked with a letter of the alphabet, a picture of something corresponding to the letter, and the word for that thing. B,bug. It's light and the colors and graphics are great. There is a built in handle to make carrying from place to place easy.
My daughter liked the same thing I do about this game: multiple activities and skills. There are five things kids can do with this so they will not be bored after the first week of playing with the Apple. It should be easy for most children to slide the selector (a worm) to a different activity choice.
1. Learn The Letters. Straight forward. Press a letter, hear what it is.
2. Learn The Letter Sounds. Select a letter then hear the letter and the sounds it makes. ("O says 'oh' and 'ah'.") Kids get to learn long and short vowel sounds. Nice.
3. Find It. Kids are asked to find a specific letter or a letter that makes a certain sound. (Some sounds are made by more than one letter so they may have more than one choice.)
4. Before And After. Kids are asked which letter comes before or after another letter?
5. Music.Press a button and one of nine tunes is played. (A little tinny. I found it annoying. Your kid will LOVE it.)
When your child makes an incorrect choice, the Apple never says they are wrong. It explains the choice they made. For instance if asked, "Which letter comes after the letter E?" and they choose S, it says, "S comes after the letter R." It doesn't ask the same question again--at least not right away. I haven't decided if this is good or bad. I don't want it to say, you're wrong, but my instinct is to ask the question again and see if the child gets it.
On the other hand, when they make the correct choice the Apple doesn't exactly give them praise, it simply affirms pleasantly, "D comes before the letter E." I would like it to say "That's correct..." or "Good job..." and then affirm the answer. I guess it's a style teaching issue, but I feel a little praise helps kids feel good about the success and motivated. I know my daughter's face lights up when using the Sesame Street Talking Alphabet and Elmo says, "That's right!"
There is an on/off switch. If the child doesn't make any selections after several seconds the voice prompts in friendly way, "Press a button." After a minute of inactivity it says, "Bye, bye" and turns itself off.
I was very impressed by the small parents' guide that comes with the game. It not only explains the toy very well, but has great tips on how to enrich your child's learning/play experience with the Apple. For instance things like asking "what do we do after dinner?" to enhance the idea of before and after.
This is almost a five star toy but it does fall short on those few points I mentioned. Even so, I find this is really the best of what I've seen out there. Your little one will really enjoy it and learn at the same time.

LeapFrog Learn & Groove Musical Table - Pink Review

LeapFrog Learn and Groove Musical Table - Pink
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son's babysitter bought this table for him when he was 11 months old and just getting into standing for long periods. Soon, I was joking that it made her obsolete. He spent about an hour a day, in small increments, just walking around the table (there's something interesting on every side) and manipulating all the various tabs, switches, knobs, and buttons, enjoying the sounds they produced.
This toy is brilliantly designed. Here are my favorite features:
1. It's pleasant for mommy to listen to. No shrill "fake baby" voices or cacophonous "music." The piano keys play pleasant jazzy riffs that actually sound really musical. The voice is an accomplished-sounding female singing in a jazz/R&B style. There are a great multitude of sounds and songs on this toy, and none of them are hideous, jarring, or overly loud. Mommy's nerves appreciate that. In fact, many times I found myself scat-singing along with the joyful female voice!
2. The controls are all different -- not just an assortment of buttons. There's a "book" with a "page" that "turns"; there's a banjo with a neck that moves; there's a spinner; there's a compartment that opens and shuts; there's a "slide" on a trombone, etc. Flipping certain switches had the effect of changing "modes," which kept the kid engaged for long, long periods, as he tried to figure out what controlled what and what kinds of effects each switch might have.
3. There's a Spanish mode. It's always good to expose tykes to language early, and this is a pleasant start. The instrumental songs are different in Spanish mode, too; they're, well, Spanish songs.
4. It's a sturdy little table, well able to handle the weight of a leaning toddler.
About a year ago, when my boy was 2, we had to put the table away for space reasons (construction work). Just after he turned 3, we took it out again, and he lit up with joy and fell to playing with it passionately once again. That's what I call a great toy.

Provide a world of learning and musical fun for your child with the LeapFrog Learn & Groove Musical Table. Designed for children ages six months to three years, this innovative toy is chock full of learning and musical activities designed to provide visual and auditory stimulation and motor skill development, as well as opportunities to learn about colors, the alphabet, and opposites for older children -- and much more. Grows with your Child The sturdy, plastic-molded, brightly colored table sits flat on the floor for babies to play at while sitting. You can attach the table's legs to adjust it to accommodate toddlers' play while standing. And it offers plenty of activities at different levels of learning to keep your child entertained for these early developmental years. Your child will delight in spinning the maraca to hear a fun rendition of the ABC song; playing the colored piano keys to practice motor skills and learn about colors; moving the trombone's slide to count to 10; and sliding the cello to learn about up and down. Kids can tap on the colorful drum and learn about colors and primary shapes, too. Then, by flipping the pages of the "book" to go from the Learning Mode to the Music Mode, kids can hear more than 40 songs and melodies, including nursery rhymes and fun individual instrument sounds that will have them singing and dancing. Plenty to Do, Lots to Learn With all of these activities, your child will exercise his or her memory and problem-solving skills with lots of things to push, pull, turn, open, and close. And with the flip of a switch, the songs and games switch from English to Spanish, offering a great introduction to foreign-language learning. The Learn & Groove Musical Table requires some assembly and needs 3 AA batteries for operation. Batteries are not included. What's in the Box 1 LeapFrog Learn and Groove Musical Table.

Big Trouble Review

Big Trouble
Average Reviews:

I'm not a fan of recorded-noise games, but my daughter got this one as a gift. The voice over gets old after the 2nd or 3rd time, and you have to listen to it on every turn. The worst, though, is the CONSTANT snare drum and high-hat back beat. Also, the age recommendation of 6+ is silly since my 5-yr old daughter had it mastered in less than 5 minutes. This is definitely a toy that will get "lost" in the holiday chaos.

EA Sports Voice Command Quarterback Indoor 30" x 40" Review

EA Sports Voice Command Quarterback Indoor 30 x 40

(More customer reviews)
Although we've purchased other EA sports products and have been satisfied, the Voice Command Quarterback is nothing but frustration. I actually can't rate the actual performance product since I never got it put together without destroying the product itself. Because the receiver target is an inflatable mat, it is nearly impossible to put the toy together without ending up with holes in the mat. Even if the game itself is fun once it assembled, there is no way the fun would outweigh the frustration of putting it together in the first place.

This is a very cute little toy and is nice to have for us addicts. However, it DOES get boring for some. You can only play with it for a little while in all honesty as it's not attention absorbing like the Pocket Neopets or the Trading Card Game.
That being said, it's a darling little tiger that hisses, murmurs and growls playfully in response to your voice/enviromental noises. I think of it as a paperweight and enjoy teasing it and watching the ears waggle while I'm procrastinating over work.
You'd probably have to be a Neo addict to get the most out of this :)!

This was not what my daughter had in mind for my little granddaughter. She returned it to the company after receiving it. I understood that I would get a refund or at least credit on my credit card if the toy was returned.
Since my daughter had returned it US Postal Service, the company would not refund my money because there was no tracking number. This is rude and I will not do business with the company again. I contacted them a few times to try to get them to make it right, but no luck. I bought it in good faith and had to pay shipping too. Now I am out all the money with nothing. Not a good experience.

Toy Story Collectors Edition Lotso Huggin Interactive Bear Review

Toy Story Collectors Edition Lotso Huggin Interactive Bear
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son is currently obsessed with everything Toy Story and as a result(and my being a big kid)I am too. So it was with great excitement that we purchased Lots O Huggin Bear.
First thing you'll notice is how huge he is. Since the Toy Story Collection(TSC)line from Thinkway is all about movie accuracy Lotso is in scale with the rest of the Toy Story gang and that means he's big. Next you'll notice the distinctive strawberry smell emanating from the package. By notice I mean you can smell it down the hall. My wife could smell it the second I walked in the door with it. Once you get him out of the box it's even stronger.
Thankfully the voice is movie accurate too, meaning Ned Beatty voiced all the lines for the toy. Generally this is true about all the TSC toys but we've been disappointed in the past to find that the TSC Woody didn't feature Tom Hanks' voice. So to hear Beatty's voice coming out of a pink, strawberry-scented bear is fantastic.
I've seen some complaints about the creepiness of the voice and I can say, without a doubt, the voice IS creepy but that's really the charm. The line are delivered in the desperate tone of someone who's been abandoned before and needs constant reassurance that it won't happen again (just like in the movie, WOW). Though a couple times I thought if I didn't hug him I would come home one day to find him dangling from a rope.
The biggest strike against this toys is the poor voice interactivity, but to be fair that is a fault with all Thinkway Toy Story toys. The box claims that if you talk to Lots O Huggin Bear that he will respond and talk back and even know when you've raised your voice. I could only get this feature to work when I was yelling and even then he always responded with the same phrase. Maybe I'm just spoiled because we own the fantastic "Aloha Stitch" from Hasbro Disney Aloha Stitch Interactive Talking Doll, which was purchased for fraction of the cost almost 10 years ago.
In the end I suppose you're not paying for the interactivity but movie accuracy which pays off in spades.
For those looking for a less creepy doll there are plenty different Lotso options out there. Disney Pixar Toy Story 3 Buddies Lotso 8 Inch Plush Bear,Disney Pixar Toy Story 3 Lotso Bear 15 Inch Plush Toy They're cheaper and don't have the creepy voice.

My daughter used a gift certificate to purchase this and was disappointed it did not work after one day. It opened without asking for her password. We tried the reset button and changing with brand new batteries, and always tried setting the password in a quiet location, with no luck. Amazon was quick to exchange and we were able to return it with a prepaid postage paid label. However, we just tried the replacement item, and it also does not work. We have the same problem, plus a new one--it sometimes won't prompt for a password to be set at all after resetting. My daughter is so perturbed with this happening twice, we're just asking for a refund. Glad it was on sale at the time, but I don't recommend this at any price.

Memorex MKS-SS1 SingStand Home Karaoke System Review

Memorex MKS-SS1 SingStand Home Karaoke System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is great fun for the kids. It was easy to set up. There's room for two microphones (it comes with one, but you may buy another), and you can add an electric guitar.
I have a Sansa mp3 player, which connected easily and works well, though it doesn't seat in the mp3 holder well. That might hold an IPOD, but I don't know. It sits, but it's not well-seated and can fall out easily.
The mic volume can be controlled up or down and there are independent switches for each mic, but if the volume of the music is turned down, the mic is also turned down. There is no way to turn the mic volume so it is louder than the music. It is possible to turn the music completely off and sing to nothing.
There is an echo option which can be controlled to allow for more or less echo in the voice.
The vocal eliminator function will eliminate vocals from a track at the touch of a button. The vocals are not completely eliminated and the music is a little distorted, but that is to be expected when eliminating vocals from a track. It is not possible to do without a little distortion. It's a nice feature to have so we don't have to go out and buy a bunch of karaoke music.
The biggest drawback to this karaoke system over others is that it lacks the lyrics display. Of course, when using our regular mp3's, we don't have lyrics anyway; but there is no option of getting lyrics display if we wanted it. I simply go find the lyrics on the internet and print them out.
The kids enjoy this microphone. Sometimes, they don't necessarily use it for singing, but it's a fun system and we will get lots of enjoyment out of it as we have already.

We just bought 2 of these for my daughters, ages 4 and a half and 8 and a half. First off, I wish there was more than just the dog version to choose from, but we solved the "whose is whose" problem with a Sharpie on the back. The voice recognition is pretty frustrating for kids, it took a good 20 minutes for my eight year old and I to get it to accept her voice. Make sure you pick a short, one syllable password, and like the other reviewer says, one with hard consonants in it. So far, I have been unable to get my 4 year old to say the password the same way several times in order to get the diary to accept her choice of password. She doesn't seem to mind too much though and both of them are in there happily writing in the diary and using the stickers. I hope Hasbro comes out with refill notepads and stickers soon!

I had to pick this up just BECAUSE of the other review here by "Larry." Anyone that would spend that much time to review I-que...well, it got me curious.
First off, after the obligatory "Charge at least 5 hours before first use" (I did overnight)..oh, and the communicator device will set you back 3 AAA batteries (not included); you proceed underneath to turn I-que from "Sleep" to "on". Prepare to chuckle...he really seems happy to come to life.
But warning here first--READ THE BOOK before you turn it on and get familiar with the communicator. I didn't do this except up to the "charge 5 hours" part and how to turn him on. I never looked at the communicator so I wasn't familiar with it. So here he's asking me questions and I have to ---oh bother...just read the book.
Otherwise--I'll admit, this is a new review but I'm quite impressed. I can see that you could literally spend hours and hours and days and days and weeks on end and never get to the end of what this thing has in memory.
The other reason this unit is intriguing is that it's unlike other "toy robots" that sing and dance and punch...kids want that stuff...they don't want to learn about how far the sun is from the earth...Things these days are different. So it certainly has the potential for the collector.
I do think it IS well made, fashioned like the I-Robot; Roomba and Scooba (I have both) and self-charges similar to the Roomba. Larry made a point about the charging terminals on the floor--the DC voltage is so low it is not dangerous--unless you place the charge base in a puddle.
I ordered all the cartridges (that collector instinct) and I think I-que has allot of potential...like Larry did, if I need to come back and add to the review I will...in the meantime I'd highly recommend, especially if yer' a gadget geek pushing 50 like me! (P.s. Shipping and packaging is outstanding: Good job Amazon!)

The i-Que robot moves around like a Roomba, but instead of vacuuming up dust particles, it spits out tons of information. An interactive robot for kids ages 8 years and up, the i-Que can spell, pronounce, and define 80,000 words from the Merriam-Webster Intermediate Dictionary thanks to its text-to-speech technology. In addition to a huge vocabulary, Encyclopedia Britannica supplied fun, educational content for features like "Word of the Day" and "This Day in History" for the robot's permanent memory.

But the 16-bit microprocessor also allows the robot to expand its knowledge base with personal interaction. Using speech recognition, the toy can identify its owner's voice, have a two-way "conversation," retain new words, and even mimic accents. An included communicator similar to a Blackberry lets you text the i-Que from a remote location in the house and receive response. This device docks on the robot and lets it learn personal information about you, such as your birthday, friends' names, your calendar of events, and more.

The battery-operated i-Que uses twin motors and track balls to easily navigate flat surfaces, is able to work itself out of corners, ducks as it passes under low tables or chairs, and is smart enough to not go over edges of counters, stairs, or other drops. When it starts to run low on power, the robot guides itself back to its docking station to recharge. While he has trivia topics such as sports, animals, history, and more right out of the box, additional cartridges are sold separately on subjects including space, geography, and the human body.
